Climbing Performance Coaching
CPC programmes are based around a healthy, life-long enjoyment of the sport whilst focusing on the three themes of Goal, Plan and Action in order to improve and maintain performance.

We see three common themes in the strategies and approaches of the highest achievers in competition.
Goal
They dare to dream big and set goals that will take time to achieve or that they may never achieve, knowing that the process itself is valuable.

---

“The only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them.” - Michelle Obama
Plan
They understand what is needed to accomplish that goal, and develop a long-term plan that breaks this down into achievable stages and actionable tasks.

---

“A person who does not think and plan long ahead will find trouble right by their door.” - Confucius
Action
They work hard to enact their plan, even when it is difficult and the results seem a long way off, relishing in the challenge and the journey rather than merely the outcome.

---

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” - Pelé

Youth Climbers
We are very happy to work with young climbers enjoying the competitive climbing scene and eager to work on improving their performance.

There is no capacity within the CPC programmes to teach young climbers to belay or climb outdoors, although we may be able to sign off some elements of their NICAS courses if they are completing this scheme with a wall. For instructional courses for children and parents check out our courses.
Under 11's We recommend that climbers under the age of 11 climb at least twice a week, including regularly attending a youth squad or club, as this ensures they still benefit from the social aspects of climbing with their peers. Enjoyment and friendships are critical at this stage, and we are very happy to work with other coaches and walls to ensure that young climbers are getting the most out of their time in clubs and our sessions with them.
Under 13's We recommend that climbers under the age of 13 continue to climb regularly with a youth squad or club to ensure they benefit from the social aspects of climbing with their peers. Consistent, targeted and structured training is key (particularly for those going through puberty and growth spurts) and we are very happy to work with other coaches and walls to ensure that our collective input is aligned and appropriate. This is a key age to learn to lead as once they are in the U15 category they will no longer compete on a top-rope - some extra sessions to learn to lead (and learn to belay for parents!) can be booked to build this into your coaching programme.
Under 15's & under 17's We suggest that youth climbers in these age categories are able to consistently train 3-4 times per week as independent users of their local walls. If we are providing a physical training programme within a Performance Package, we are happy to build in club or squad sessions or incorporate them as part of the training if other coaches / wall can facilitate the scheduled exercises.

Coaching Climbers with Disabilities or Impairments
All climbers will benefit from being stronger, fitter, bendier, braver or more knowledgeable! We aspire to ensure that no climber who wants to improve is prevented from accessing our services, and are pleased to have a GB Para-climbing Team Coach and adaptive climbing activities specialist in the Climb Cornwall team.

We understand that you may have additional questions or key information to share with us, so please feel free to get in touch.
Strategy & Consultation - 6 month programme
Our strategic expertise and detailed knowledge of the competitive climbing landscape is used to support your journey towards achieving your goals. This involves a goal-setting and performance analysis process, the development of long-term performance strategies, season road maps, & a detailed Individual Athlete Development Plan, and followed by a regular, ongoing review and update process.

This strategic work can be complemented with quarterly in-person catch ups, 1:1 coaching sessions, and coach attendance/support at key competitions or events.

We are happy to work with other coaches as part of larger multi-disciplinary teams, and may signpost athletes to specialists for nutrition, sport-psychology or physiotherapy if required.

Meet the CPC Team
All CPC programmes are lead by Climb Cornwall head coach, Jay who has been a Coach or Head of Delegation for GB Climbing at multiple World Climbing (previously IFSC) events, working with the GB Youth, Senior, and Paraclimbing Teams in Lead, Boulder and Speed events since 2020 and has even won several World Paraclimbing Championship medals himself as a Sight Guide for climbers in the Visually Impaired categories.
Jay was involved in the development of the GB Regional Development squad programme in 2021, the design & delivery of the GB Paraclimbing Team training programme since 2020 and in the delivery of the Youth Climbing Series and British Championships/Home Nation Events since 2018.
Around all this what he still enjoys the most is delivering 1:1 performance coaching for competitive and outdoor climbers!
